On safari in Namibia
Namibia has an enormous variety of experiences to offer, even much more than you might expect at first glance. Of course, admiring nature and animals is often the main focus. This is perfectly possible through game drives in open 4×4 off-road vehicles or during nature walks. In various places, so-called trails have been set out, which you – whether accompanied by a guide or not – can make use of. But it can be more extreme: in Namibia it is possible to track both the white and black rhinoceros on foot, accompanied by a qualified guide, of course.
In addition to game drives and walks, there is laundry list of other activities: a boat trip can be taken from Walvis Bay in search of sea lions and dolphins. It is possible to fly over Sossusvlei in a hot air balloon, there are geological formations, ancient rock paintings and engravings, tubular tree fields, canyons and petrified forests. There are sand dunes to sand-board on, you can tour on Quad-bikes, go shore fishing and learn about a variety of native cultures. You read, the list is endless. The activities can be incorporated into an itinerary in any way possible.
Accommodations in Namibia
To admire all this beauty, there is an extensive range of accommodations to the farthest corners of the country. Since Namibia has an excellent road network, the lodges are mostly easily accessible by road. And for those who have less time at their disposal, or opt for comfort: there is always an airstrip nearby where small planes can land.
Nature reserves in Namibia
The great diversity of flora and fauna is reflected in the many nature reserves in Namibia:
Etosha National Park
Etosha National Park is unique in Africa. The park’s main attraction is a salt pan so large you can see it from space. Romdom the water holes gather an abundance of game. Etosha National Park is one of the most accessible game reserves in Namibia and southern Africa.
Sossusvlei & Namib-Naukluft park
The gigantic Namib-Naukluft Park is home to many forms of desert life. The area is also known as the gateway to the famous red sand dunes of Sossusvlei. The spectacular dunes tower up to 300 meters above the surrounding land and are surrounded by rugged, ancient volcanic mountains and open plains. Larger desert specialists such as ostrich, springbok and gemsbok thrive in the area, and carnivores such as Bat-eared Fox, Cape Fox, Brown Hyaena and Black-backed Jackal are also regularly seen. When experiencing this nature reserve, the emphasis is on the unique desert fauna, spectacular views and unlikely starry skies. Unique birds are also regular visitors. The Dune Lark, Burchell’s Courser, Ludwig’s Bustard and Stark’s Lark, you are definitely going to be seeing them!
Skeleton Coast Park
One of the most inhospitable yet breathtakingly beautiful areas on earth. The rugged and uninhabited wilderness, a lunar landscape of sand and stones, moving “barchan” sand dunes and treacherous canyons is the introduction to the harsh Atlantic coastline. Along the whalebone-strewn coastline live seal colonies and predators such as the black-backed jackal and the timid Brown hyena. Adding to the sheer beauty and complete desolation of the area is a special variety of subtle flora and fauna, perfectly adapted to life in the dry, unsheltered conditions.
Fish River canyon en Nama Karoo
The typical image of the Nama Karoo is formed by the yellow flowers of the tube tree (Aloe) against a steel-blue sky, with the backdrop of the second largest canyon in the world; Fish River Canyon. A spectacular nature reserve, where in addition to the fascinating views, animals such as Springbok, Gemsbok, Hartebeest, Ostrich and Mountain Zebra can be found.
