Namibia

Namibia is highly contrasting and celebrated for its vast landscapes, infinitely blue skies, and fantastic starry skies. The many national parks and nature reserves are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna in a great diversity of habitats: the white salt pans of Etosha National Park, the red dunes of Sossusvlei, lonely beaches along the Skeleton Coast, and the uninhabited wilderness of the Damaraland and the Kunene.

Namibia’s climate is as one would expect in a desert. Warm days and cooler (sometimes even quite cold) nights. The cold Benguela Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean ensures that there is virtually no rain on the coast for most of the year. Humidity is very low in most parts of the country, but can reach 80% in the extreme north during the summer.

On safari in Namibia

Namibia has an enormous variety of experiences to offer, even much more than you might expect at first glance. Of course, admiring nature and animals is often the main focus. This is perfectly possible through game drives in open 4×4 off-road vehicles or during nature walks. In various places, so-called trails have been set out, which you – whether accompanied by a guide or not – can make use of. But it can be more extreme: in Namibia it is possible to track both the white and black rhinoceros on foot, accompanied by a qualified guide, of course.

In addition to game drives and walks, there is laundry list of other activities: a boat trip can be taken from Walvis Bay in search of sea lions and dolphins. It is possible to fly over Sossusvlei in a hot air balloon, there are geological formations, ancient rock paintings and engravings, tubular tree fields, canyons and petrified forests. There are sand dunes to sand-board on, you can tour on Quad-bikes, go shore fishing and learn about a variety of native cultures. You read, the list is endless. The activities can be incorporated into an itinerary in any way possible.

Accommodations in Namibia

To admire all this beauty, there is an extensive range of accommodations to the farthest corners of the country. Since Namibia has an excellent road network, the lodges are mostly easily accessible by road. And for those who have less time at their disposal, or opt for comfort: there is always an airstrip nearby where small planes can land.

Nature reserves in Namibia

The great diversity of flora and fauna is reflected in the many nature reserves in Namibia:

Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park is unique in Africa. The park’s main attraction is a salt pan so large you can see it from space. Romdom the water holes gather an abundance of game. Etosha National Park is one of the most accessible game reserves in Namibia and southern Africa.

Sossusvlei & Namib-Naukluft park

The gigantic Namib-Naukluft Park is home to many forms of desert life. The area is also known as the gateway to the famous red sand dunes of Sossusvlei. The spectacular dunes tower up to 300 meters above the surrounding land and are surrounded by rugged, ancient volcanic mountains and open plains. Larger desert specialists such as ostrich, springbok and gemsbok thrive in the area, and carnivores such as Bat-eared Fox, Cape Fox, Brown Hyaena and Black-backed Jackal are also regularly seen. When experiencing this nature reserve, the emphasis is on the unique desert fauna, spectacular views and unlikely starry skies. Unique birds are also regular visitors. The Dune Lark, Burchell’s Courser, Ludwig’s Bustard and Stark’s Lark, you are definitely going to be seeing them!

Skeleton Coast Park

One of the most inhospitable yet breathtakingly beautiful areas on earth. The rugged and uninhabited wilderness, a lunar landscape of sand and stones, moving “barchan” sand dunes and treacherous canyons is the introduction to the harsh Atlantic coastline. Along the whalebone-strewn coastline live seal colonies and predators such as the black-backed jackal and the timid Brown hyena. Adding to the sheer beauty and complete desolation of the area is a special variety of subtle flora and fauna, perfectly adapted to life in the dry, unsheltered conditions.

Fish River canyon en Nama Karoo

The typical image of the Nama Karoo is formed by the yellow flowers of the tube tree (Aloe) against a steel-blue sky, with the backdrop of the second largest canyon in the world; Fish River Canyon. A spectacular nature reserve, where in addition to the fascinating views, animals such as Springbok, Gemsbok, Hartebeest, Ostrich and Mountain Zebra can be found.

Climate Namibia

The climate in Namibia is as one would expect in a desert, with hot days and cooler (sometimes even quite cold) nights. The cold Benguela Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean ensures that virtually no rain falls on the coast during most of the year.

  • The “rainy season” – as far as one can speak of it – lasts from October to April; the rest of the year is mainly cloudless.
  • Humidity is very low in most parts of the country, but can reach 80% in the extreme north, during the summer. Average rainfall is 50 mm on the coast, 350 mm inland, and 700 mm in the Caprivi strip
  • During the summer, temperatures can reach above 40 degrees Celsius. In winter it is somewhat less hot, and night and early morning temperatures can be around freezing. Mornings on the coast are also cool, with no rain, but frequent fog from late afternoon to mid-morning.
  • Spring starts in September, with vegetation coming into leaf and days getting considerably warmer. Evenings and mornings are still sporadically cool. Starting in October, days become very warm, with evenings cooling off less. Sometimes rain occurs, the larger showers can usually be expected from December.

Waterberg Plateau National Park

The Waterberg Plateau rises about 200 m above its surroundings. Since the upper layers consist of porous rock, precipitation seeps through the rocks and creates lush vegetation at the base of the mountain.

The area around the mountain was declared a conservation area in 1972. Some wildlife species have been reintroduced, such as the hook-lipped and broad-lipped rhinoceros. Buffalo, many species of antelope, leopards and cheetahs are also found on the mountain.

    Reviews Namibia

From day one to day fourteen everything was arranged perfectly, every detail and every mile according to the booklets. Fantastic nature and views, campsite’s and lodges very well organized and perfectly matched! The self-drive concept is recommended to everyone, exciting but also very relaxing, because you become one with everything you encounter. Oscar thank you so much for this wonderful trip and we will definitely use your services again soon!

Our trip through Namibia in January 2017.What a beautiful country! Nature is overwhelmingly beautiful with intense colors and breathtaking views. The trip was perfectly put together by Oscar Haartman and extensively documented. Adventurous and unforgettable! We drove about 3000 km with 2 cars incl. tent on the roof. The alternation of campsites and lodges was absolutely fine. The beautifully located campsites also made camping an experience! Kalahari desert, Sossusvlei, few days coast and Etosha game reserve, how much we enjoyed! Thank you Oscar for your great service and guidance, you gave us a great trip!

In the summer of July and August we traveled to Namibia. We had a super trip. Oscar helped us very much and put together a beautiful trip. His advice on organizing the trip was very valuable. Among other things, we liked the flight trips on certain parts of the trip. We are already looking forward to next time! Thank you Oscar!
